WTA Players Who Became Mother During Their Career


Serena Williams announced the arrival of a new member in her family after her 23rd Grand Slam victory. The whole world was left overawed thinking that she won this year’s Australian Open while being two months pregnant!

Although, it is pretty exciting and beautiful to see a woman enjoying her motherhood but Serena Williams isn’t the first one who became a mother while on tour.

Kim Clijsters:
On 6th May, 2007 citing injuries the Belgian called it quits and retired from professional tennis. She got married to Brian Lynch in July that year and gave birth to a girl in February, 2008. Later when she was asked to play for an exhibition match along with Tim Henman, Steffi Graf and Andre Agassi to test the new Wimbledon roof, she called a press conference and revealed that she’s planning to comeback on tour. Although, she said that that would be more of a second career as her marriage, he child and her father’s demise were not part of her first stint. Clijsters went on to win two Grand Slams, US Open in 2010 and the Australian Open in 2012 before retiring.

Victoria Azarenka:

The former world number one and a two time Australian Open champion, Victoria Azarenka, announced her pregnancy on July 15, 2016 via social media. On December 20 she gave birth to a baby boy named Leo. After taking a break of almost an year, Vika will return to tour on July 31st when she plays at Stanford.

Kateryna Bondarenko:
The 30 year old Ukrainian, who reached a career high of 29 in 2009 took retirement from tennis after she got pregnant. Returning after an year and half, Bondarenko played her first tournament as a qualifier at the 2014 Katowice Open. After a series of early losses Bondarenko found her rhythm and went on to win a 25k and a 50k event. Since then, she’s been regularly playing on the tour and is currently ranked 89 in the world.

Casey Dellacqua:
After publicly announcing that she’s gay, Dellacqua and her partner Amanda welcomed their  son, Blake Benjamin. Dellacqua didn’t reveal much about her personal life but did say that motherhood is a motivation for her and that she’s happy she is back on tour and will be travelling with family.

Sybille Bammer and Rossana de los rios are the two other players who were mothers or became a mother while active on tour.
